Ring Resizing
“Do you do ring sizing”? This is the most often asked question from customers stopping by or calling Anspach’s Jewelry. The answer, or course, is “yes we do”…. and on the premises, by one of our three bench jewelers. We can size most rings, whether they are made of platinum, gold or silver. We size mens wedding rings, fashion rings, engagement rings, and even eternity rings.
Normally the sizing process involves adding or removing metal from the palm side of a ring. Many jewelry stores still use a torch and heat up the ring to a near melting point temperature, and solder the seams created by the sizing process. This can, sometimes, be a risky endeavor and the soldered seams can be weak and possibly break.. At Anspach’s Jewelry, we use one of our two laser welders, and weld the seam(s). Welded seams are far superior, and stronger than solder, and there is virtually no risk of damaging gemstones.
Wedding bands that are uniform, with the same width and thickness all the way around, and that don’t contain gemstones or diamonds, can be “stretched” or “shrunk” in size. This can be accomplished without cutting the ring and creating a seam as is done in a normal sizing. Many tutone and all-the-way- around engraved wedding rings, can be sized this way. Sometimes this can be done while you wait, in other instances we need to take the ring “in” and anneal, or soften, the metal so it can properly expand or contract.
Some silver rings can be “pound sized” larger, provided there is enough thickness and width on the palm side of the ring. This process involves basically hammering the metal on the backside of the ring, and then properly finishing and polishing the affected area. There are no seams in this process either and it actually tempers the silver, making it harder and more durable. This process is rarely used on gold or platinum rings.
